Top 25 Canadian Rock Songs
Ok, off the top of my head, I just had to pull this one out of my ass because it was loitering on the tip of my tongue. It was sitting there in the background, glistening like a shiny golden fruit, ready to be plucked from the bendy jello-laden tree of creativity. No Can-Con bullshit in this list baby, just pure platinum pleasure that can never be bound by borders.

K-Man, I think you've covered all my fave Canadian bands in there, but maybe shoulda thrown Innocence by Harlequin in, just to keep Sheena happy....and because it's a great tune.
(BTW, I know #20 isn't your fave track on the album, but you threw it in 'cause despite your take-no-bullshit exterior, you're a sweetie.)
Leather- ok, so Talk To Me might have edged it from a song writing point of view. But I'll tell you something dude- and this no bullshit- the drum track on Tango may be one the most solid fucking performances ever laid down on any track, anywhere.
It was the pinnacle of the musos- competing-with-machines era- and on that track, the drummer won. Hands down.
Dude, you've just made me all tingly.
The irony is that when Bernard Edwards came in to lay the bass track he thought he was playing to a drum program, and I remember thinking "Christ, what's the fucking point."
It's taken 20 years, but you've single-handedly justified it for me. I don't know what to say man, except thanks.
...the Bernard Edwards, one of the greatest studio bassists of all time, said that?
Holy fuck man. You don't need me to fluff you. Your playing speaks for itself.
One hesitates to suggest additions to so august a list, but seriously, how you can't leave out the quintessential Canadian rocker, Ronnie Hawkins. Gotta have either "Forty Days" or "Who Do You Love" on there. Got to, got to, yeah, you got to...
C'mon K-Dough!! Where's the Canadian classic cut "Witch Hunt" by Minotaur??? Featuring the best bass player in the country, Greg Lazor!! And what about "On The Road To Rock" by Kick Axe??? Just think about that title. "On The Road To Rock"......not "On The Road To Apply For A Job At Wal-Mart" or "On The Road Because We're 38 Years Old And Our Parents Are Sick Of Our Bullshit And Finally Kicked Us Out Of The Basement". Kick Axe was "On The Road To Rock" That's deep man. Real fuckin' deep. Only in Canada my friends......
Isabel: Cuts Like A Knife was my other choice.
RE: my personal taste: While it is reflected in my list, I was trying also to be diplomatic- geographically and genre-wise.
At least I didn't pick "Everything I Do..."
balbulican:
Ronnie Hawkins definitely rocked but in an entirely diffrent sense of the word rock that I was employing here.
He'd be in the same category as Colin James, Powder Blues, Long John Baldry et al.
K-Dough, please excuse using your blog to pass message along but...
Leatherhands, just checked out lotusmagnet and what can I say? I'm blown away. Rest assured a band of married thirty-somethings in NB will be attempting to cover Tunnel at the local bar in the near future.
I guess for that comment to have the intended effect, I should've pointed out that I am one of those married thirty-somethings in the band. We'll fit that in between STP's Crackerman and Sloan's Underwhelmed.
Eugene- be my guest dude. Musos are always welcome here!
You should be ashamed of yourself K-dough!! How did you forget about The Beatles??? Everyone knows they're the best thing to ever come out of Liverpool, Saskatchewan!!!
Now I'm going to ride away on my unicorn and talk with all my leprechaun friends about the great ideas of my political party, the NDP. Welfare for everyone!!! Free housing for everyone!!! Kyoto handcuffs for all business leaders!!!
..oh and please keep helping all those hardworking families out there!
I don't wanna talk shit here!
KD you obviously missed Jerry Lee Lewis and "Great Balls of Fire", di-int you?
PS - I fired Porneay; can hopefully hook up with Smenita's agent.
Squeaky's Nuts: I was about to fire a blazing retort back at you when I realized "how much can a scrotum know about geography any way?".
You're off the hook, bag boy.
But Jerry Lee Lewis is not Canadian.
Pam- thus my comment above: how much can a scrotum know about geography any way?
Okay, okay. We were typing at the same time.
I would have skipped Alannah Myles and added Big League by Tom Cochrane.
Just a thought.
I totally see your point Pam- problem is, I despise him, post Red Rider.
LOL...Why would you hate Tom Cochrane?
I also thought Lee Aaron would make your list, for old time's sake.
Lee and I go way back. Right back to the red spandex camel toe days.
She thinks she is a jazz singer now. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...ahhhh.
Just a sec..Trying to picture you with a camel toe...
lol!
Picture a squid jammed into a nylon.
LMAO..in red spandex, no less. I bet you were HOT. LOL
noooooo- red was Lee. Red was our bass player.
For me? Only leather and solid black or zebra stripe spandex!
Well, I always say there is nothing sexier than a man in zebra spandex, at any weight or age.
What about Max Webster??
The Party?
Hangover?
A Million Vacations?
High Class in Borrowed Shoes?
I'd agree that Hangover and A Million Vacations are quintessential Canadian tunes.
Or Let go The Line, Night Flights, Here Among the Cats- actually they were awesome.
No cigarettes. No eh matchez.
Ha ha! HUGE Max fan.
Eugene, you are way too kind. I like to think I'm playing with these guys just for fun, but it still feels good to be validated. Us Musos are real egocentric fucks, no? What part of NB you in mate? One of my fave provinces...spent a marvelous summer renting a cottage in Tidnish, right on the NB/NS border.
(AND OF COURSE, you're in the same province as the awesome Sabian factory!!)
k-dough re: attire....I have a vivid image of a turquoise tutu & a red feather boa
Can I introduce some class into this musical melee ? How about "First Born Son" by the McGarrigle Sisters, Corey Hart's "Sunglasses" & Kim Mitchell's "Might as well go for a Soda Pop"
LH - I call them as I hear them! It always makes me laugh whenever I drive by Meductic (about an hour from me in F'ton) and see the Sabian plant. I know that 99% of the other cars on the road have no idea they're driving by a world leader. The mere mention of the name Sabian makes our drummer drool like a dog!
V- I agree on this one: "First Born Son" by the McGarrigle Sisters,
Harlequin - "Thinking of You"
Fist - "Thunder in Rock"
