Neo-Content News Round-Up

What a glorious long weekend for those of the more insane right wing persuasion. On the heels of the Pope blessing the frozen pants of the nation, there is news of an Alberta MP's Private Members Bill that tries to advance the rights of the animate, thinking fetus argument. Next thing you know, those nutty pro-lifers will be suggesting we tax fetuses, since they are, in theory, old enough to vote- and as informed as the average voter at that.

The next juicy item for you salivating neo-cons was news that 50 "suspected" Taliban insurgents were slaughtered in a southern Afghan village. No body count on charred babies and women yet, but I suspect we won't be seeing those numbers for some time.

Blood, death, sexual schitzophrenia and mean-spirited politicization of female reproductive systems...it's pure poetry. Breath easy and sleep well fuckers, cuz everything is right in dreamy, repressed 1950's polite-on-the-surface, monstrous-under-the-thin-facade right wing Canada.

And today, shake hands with your children in a stern, business-like fashion, give 'em an extra soda pop and thank god Alberta, or any other province, isn't teeming with muslims or feminist uteruses- or whatever it is that scares you into further intolerance.

How does the Pope qualify as neocon? The old Pope wasn't.

He was against Iraq. Even let Tarik Aziz kiss his ring.

Maybe this new one is - how do you know? Or does neo-con not mean anything?

K-Dough,
I know Leon Benoit and he is far from being a nut. If he says this Bill is meant to protech pregnant women, then, that's exactly what his intentions are. Sometimes, for purely shock value purposes, or to raise comments from your readers, you fall short of what could have been a valuable contribution to your blog. Definitely not your best work today!

Why? Because you don't agree with my opinion? I guess equally it's not your best work to be issuing hate statements against people based on their sexuality?

That shit ain't cool with me dude. Comments like that would make me get up and go over to your table in a pub and knock your fucking teeth out. Even if I am not bisexual...

By the way, I'm sure there are a lot of bisexual dudes in prison who would love to hear you spew that shit...muffled and into a pillow.

Trust me, dude, you'd need help. And so would those guys in prison. Been there, dude, and my asshole is still cherry! And when did it become a hate crime to speak of medical facts.
Other people I hate: Drunk drivers who kill people. Politicans who rip off the taxpayer. Pet owners who abuse their pets. Farmers who don't take proper care of their livestock. Nuts who shoot cops. Pedophiles. Kidnapers. Rapists. And that's just for starters.

Wow, tough thread. The fetus issue is very complex for my (admittedly slightly hung over) brain.
My first moral instinct is to leave women's bodies the hell alone (in the legislative sense, of course) but I've always felt that somebody I knew personally many dark years ago, who pushed his pregnant wife down the stairs...arguably causing the miscarriage of her fetus...should have been responsible for more than the assault of the woman. Was this just a desire for maximum punishment of the offending asshole, or a sign that my "pro choice stance" was wishy-washy? I've never been able to reconcile that. It's sometimes a tough call to hold a static position that feels right under all potential situations.

leather- thanks for the spiritual advice.

re: the murder/fetus thing. The moral argument is persuasive. I have no probloem with changing sentencing to reflect the heinous nature of the crime.

The problem is that it compels the courts to interpret the defintion of fetus in a legal sense and thus could open the door for pro-lifers to challenge existing laws re: abortion.

Interesting that there are no comments from women on this thread. K, this sparked a debate at my house last night. I'm prochoice but I gave some thought to this bill and I think this falls into a really grey area for me, personally. I would not support any bill that might be a step back for women, but at the same time I think that the assault (and resulting termination of pregnancy)should carry a stiff penalty. It definitely hits a nerve when I think of my own pregnancies and how vulnerable I felt at the time, but I think if that door is opened in the courts it would do more to harm women than protect women.

I'm with you Pam. My sentiments excatly. It's a brilianty way to galvanize political supoprt for redefinition of what a fetus is.

I think the logical argument on the right to choose side is that sentencing is the key. We don't need to change/clarify the defnition of "fetus" if sentencing adequately reflects the fact that a fetus was killed as well.

I think new, comprehensive sentencing packages can accomplish this. They can force judges and crowns to take into acount the fact that it wasn't just the woman who died.
