K-Dough, I don't think we have to worry.

Squeaky's comment reminded me; despite the genetic calisthenics of Jesiz and his crew, we're supposed to do the opposite of what Stockwell says, aren't we?

I take it that you think banning hand guns is the answer.
Perhaps you have information that supports your point of view.
Even if handguns were banned what makes you think that a handgun prohibition law would be applied any more strenuously than the current restrictions on handgun use?

Doug- I do not, sir, think it's "the" answer. I do, however, believe it is part of the answer.

BTW- your brother Fig and I are intimately acquainted :P

Yes with a stroke of paper criminals will all lay down their arms because thats what criminals do is avoid breaking the law at all costs.

:)

Lets see murder rates are 50% higher now then in 1962 when we last used the death penalty.

The obvious solution is a ban on hand guns I mean they had a ban on them in 1962 right? WRONG.

No people per capita had MORE guns and we were safer, imagine.

In fact in the UK and Australia has a higher crime rate after they banned firearms. If it didn't work there the obvious thing to do is ignore what went wrong and just do the same thing here and who cares how much lower our murder rate was in 1962. Or that every year since Canada brought in the long gun registry the murder rate has gone up let us not be deceived by actual facts when can just make lame claims like outlawing handguns will get the Bandidos, Hells Angels, Mad Cowz, Indian posse and others to get rid of them.

And some say Stock isn't swift. I know my candidate for the smert club.

Too bad they don't have the last few years on the end of stats can's image below, to show where Chretiens folly [the long gun registry] pushed up the rates, with it's wonderful proposal of safer working conditions for criminals.

genslub- higher crime rates after guns are banned? I noticed you said "crime rates" not murders by gun rates.

that's pure gun loving propagandist bullshite.

instead of defending guns, tell us if you think it would be a good idea to decrease death-by-gun rates.

well? hmm?

"We have looked at other jurisdictions that have put in bans on handguns, and it has not reduced crime with firearms, crime with handguns," Day told CTV Newsnet in an interview from Kelowna, B.C. on Monday.

"What does reduce crime with firearms, what is effective, is to have more officers on the street, which we are funding at the federal level -- a more aggressive approach to gun-smuggling." [...]

"That's the way to reduce gun crime. That's what we want to see happen." [...]

Day said the current law allows only target shooters and "certain types of collectors" to acquire handguns. He said there needs to be an aggressive approach to gun smuggling. "That's where the problem comes, not the target shooters who are the law-abiding citizens, but the illegal ones. That's where we need to see the focus."

So Stock gets some of it right even though he ain't so dang smert and believes in them biblical dinosawers and all.

You know just because someone holds nonsensical, illogical opinions on some issues doesn't necessarily mean they are completely nonsensical and illogical in all things - take Mr. Layton for example.
That is not to say that people that think they know it all don't irritate the hell out of those of us that do.

Hey K...One quick comment for Doug F Newton...I'm no smert fella er nuthin' but I'm pretty sure if you look up the classification of a handgun it's an ANTI-PERSONNEL weapon (certainly isn't anti-aircraft, anti-tank, anti-etc). In a society where it's illegal to kill personnel, the question is not why shouldn't anyone be able to own an anti-personnel weapon but why should they?

Why is the argument always misplaced around "banning" (or not) something?

The argument for is always bandied about as a panacea (imagine, the utopia!)...

The argument agin' as ridiculously and twice as vociferously defended as a "rights" issue ... and derided as smert by the other side, sometimes ...

The argument is simply a red herring in disguise.

The real question: is the incessant lobby to ban or not to ban handguns, in this case, perpetrated in order to distract and consume the media and the public appetite for the subject?

Because, without all this noise we the people might be able to actually work our way through the certainly difficult task of creating a workable proces which might in time bear fruit?

You'll have to take that argument up with the NRA. I don't own a hand gun and never would.
My point and Mr. Day's is that a hand gun ban would be just as useless as the existing hand gun restrictions have been in preventing the shootings here in the big smoke. Calling for a handgun ban and blaming the U.S. are political cop outs IMHO. K-Dough has the bigger picture.

Hey K

Me, I really don't care what stats say about hand guns. The only thing I know is that there is only one use for hand guns and that is killing so I wonder why a peace loving society such as ours is not banning and stopping hand gun manufacture?

If existing hand guns are destroyed and no more is manufactured at the very least, innocent kids won't die anymore from gun shot wounds.

"I wonder why a peace loving society such as ours is not banning and stopping hand gun manufacture?"

I am not aware of a Canadian hand gun manufacturer - maybe there is one but everything I've read claims these illegal weapons are smuggled into the country.

"If existing hand guns are destroyed and no more is manufactured at the very least, innocent kids won't die anymore from gun shot wounds."

The guns used are illegal now - what would make you think that these shooters will turn in their weapons for destruction.
Even if we could get the US to stop manufacturing hand guns what about Russia and China.
Criminals are not nice peaceful citizens as they constantly demonstrate to us by shooting each other and innocent bystanders.
They will get their weapons one way or the other.
We need to demonstrate that this is unacceptable in our peace loving society by coming down very hard on the people that supply and use hand guns illegally.

There are two hand gun manufacturers that I could find in Canada - both in Ontario - Phoenix Arms and Para Ordinance - but check out the list of worldwide suppliers.
