Hand Gun Ban in Ontario?

To all Northerners who feel that owning a hand gun is an inherent right: It is not. It is a privilege bestowed upon you by society. If society, as reflected through the lens of our legislative system, says that privilege is no longer useful or practical, then so be it. You can whine all the way to the taxidermists on that one, Right Whingers. Then again, if we ban hand guns, what are we going to use to shoot all those surplussed sterilized pit bulls with?canada, politics, k-dough, canada, political, liberal, conservative, Harper, Canada, politics, k-dough

Canada is a modern society who can (read: has the potential to) lead internationally. We are progressive in many social aspects and willing to work with many cultures.
In light of this, guns are not needed in today's society. Gun collectors are not needed. Gun shows are not required. Locking them up clearly doesn't work and people who claim they use them safely don't speak for the people who steal them and use them for crime.
I'm not naive enough to say that banning all handguns will stop all crime, but if we combine a gun-ban with no bail for gun crimes, and extreme Judicial sentences, then we'll be on the right track for keeping Canada a modern nation of the world.

You always had a way with them Broke-Your-Back-Side Mountain types Harding.

I hear them two-teethed squirrel huntin' swine humpin' men are highly sought after for their pelts. You should get a shot gun and get yerself one.

Absolutely no reason to have a gun. None.

Citizens who talk about their rights to gun ownership have been scientifically proven to be males with exceptionally tiny genitalia, who because their nads are so diminutive, can not make enough testosterone to cause their muscles to grow. This makes them weak and cowardly. Poor pitiful bastards.

I'd like to issue a challenge to any one of you small-balled fruit baskets out there who thinks guns are good. Bring your plastic shovel over to my sandbox anytime and we'll fight for a Jello Pop. Your plastic shovel is no match for a Tonka truck to the noggin.

I live in BC, the Kootenay's to be precise. I have lived in major city's most of my life, never needed a gun there. This part of Canada, different ball game, if you want to go on a hike..with your bear spray...that's great..the bears think it's funny too. I find it disappointing that some urbanites don't realise our rural communities face different challanges..not better or worse, just different. To say "Absolutely no reason to have a gun. None." Is a pat pat on the head, nice doggy, from someone who does'nt understand life in an different region.

It may be we need to look at different laws for different regions....but someone living in Toronto, can't tell someone in the back woods of the Kootenays what they need for protection.

We don't share the same reality.

Anonymous- I hear ya... As one who is guilty of being an urban espresso sipping fool, I understand what you are saying. I spent a lot of time in Northern Ontario as a kid and know that bears can be scary mo-fos at the best of times.

Our problem is finding a fair balance in this country between your constituency and mine. Truth be told, I would rather hike unnarmed through the mountains and take my chances on meeting up with a grizzly than do the same in some parts of my city. Bears have more common sense and are less confrontational than some of the teen monsters we have right here in our concrete habitat.

I thank you though for your balanced, thoughful comments!
